Fear, control, and results

I have written about this topic many times because it seems to me that our human existence revolves around this concept.

We all have and experience fear regularly, though we are rarely aware of it. We are raised by people who pass their fears onto us and we acquire our own fears depending on many factors.

As a result of our unconscious fears and dreads, we attempt to control those situations and people who we assume that they threaten us. The way we control these depends on our circumstances and personality.

Most people try to control their environment by posing their opinion on others expecting them to change accordingly. At the same time, we do not notice that our opinions are ‘ours only’, it is not the truth. Whatever we experience or conclusions we draw, they are ours, and others may draw different conclusions. We must accept that.

And this is the key. We are not ‘right’. Neither it is our job to put the world right. Our job is to heal and deal with the underlying fear that drive us to attempt to control the world so we can feel more secure.

I am a recovering ‘fear-monger’. I grew up with an enormous amount of insecurity during the insane times of a socialistic regime. I understand that depth and highs of dread and I spent a considerable amount of time investigating my own fears and others.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to ‘treat’ the results of ‘fear’ until one is willing to look in the eye of the ‘devil’ and start confronting it.

It is one of my daily practices. It is impossible to explain the devastation our untreated fear-monger creates especially in the area of our mental health and in our relationships.

Many people, unknowingly, believe that control is the way forward. Just have a look at present so called ‘geopolitics’. It is all about ‘national security’.

However, the truth is, that we project our inner fears and insecurities onto the world and expect others to ‘fix’ it for us which is impossible. The fear never dissipates, until we confront it within ourselves.

How to confront our fears?

That is the easy part. Willingness to face our fears is the journey. Gaining awareness where and what we try to control are the ‘hints’ where our greatest fears lie. As we become more aware of them, we are ready to look them in the eye and release them.

One crucial fact is that fear can only be released when we have something greater to ‘look and hold onto’, bigger than ourselves and our shared humanity. As long as you feel alone or you can only rely on another human for ‘security’, fear stays.

Only by building a relationship with something greater than ‘man’ can provide the feeling of safety and a release from the grasp of fear. We need to be able to look behind the fear. It does not matter how you call this ‘greater presence’, God, the Divine, Allah, Shiva, the Loving. What matters is the knowing that there is a source of ‘all good’ beyond our crazy world of insecurities.

21 December, the shortest day

St. Thomas day, St. Thomas gray,
The longest night and shortest day.

December 21 is usually the shortest day of the year, yet this day usually commenced the Christmas preparation of cleaning and baking. Although we no longer honor St. Thomas on this day, we can still use this day as a reminder to put in exerted efforts and start finishing our external preparations for Christmas. All the rest of the week should be more of spiritual preparation.

Father Francis X. Weiser tells of some other old customs of this day:

In some parts of central Europe ancient customs of “driving demons away are practiced on the Feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle (December 21) and during the following nights (Rough Nights), with much noise, cracking of whips, ringing of hand bells, and parades of figures in horrible masks.

In a Christianized version of this custom farmers will walk through the buildings and around the farmyard, accompanied by a son or one of the farm hands. They carry incense and holy water, which they sprinkle around as they walk. Meanwhile, the rest of the family and servants are gathered in the living room reciting the rosary. This rite is to sanctify and bless the whole farm in preparation for Christmas, to keep all evil spirits away on the festive days, and to obtain God’s special protection for the coming year.

When the darkness is the thickest, the fear is the strongest. People with less awareness and understanding thought that they could keep the ‘devil’ (our fears) at bay by making noise and scaring it away.

Funnily enough, the opposite is true. Fear can only be eased away in the silence. The more we experience the fear, the more we need to sit down and connect with the Divine Presence.

The devil lives in our minds, in our thoughts and it shows up as anxiety, worry, concern, distress, upset, unease, disturbance, etc. We may not even notice it in activity filled life.

Today, on the 21st of December, we are asked to face our fears.

This morning I watched this video below.

Just like with Matthew, it hit me with a lightning bolt. I must start saying no, I must prove myself that I am not desperate any more. Desperation is a form of fear, fear of not having, anxiety about the future, financial insecurity.

What to do?

Today is the day of facing our deepest fears (if we chose it to be). We are asked to sit in the silence for a while look the fear in the face and say: NO MORE! Then we must thank the fear for protecting us by saying: Thank you for having protected me from destitution up until now. Thank you for being on my guard.  Then we let go: I now let you go, you can go to sleep now, you can rest. I will take care of myself from now on. Then we look up (inwardly), connect with the Divine Presence and release it all up, back to the Ultimate energy of Love, that is God. I see the fear dissipate into stardust. … It is done. Amen.

Facing fears

You may not credit this but our freedom from our challenges lies in our facing our fears. I know it sounds both weird and unbelievable. I did not believe it myself either, until I tried.

Fear is not a ‘thing’ that we can ‘meet’ in the physical really. Fear is sneaky and it lies low. Depending on the nature of our fears, they appear in the areas of our life where we are in a cave, in the darkness.

Facing our fears means ‘letting the light in’. It may appear in way of actually doing something to face our fears or in meditation we consciously release ‘specific’ aspects of our fear.

What to do?

For example  – if you have a fear of looking ridiculous because you have low self-esteem and your self-image requires you to look cool so nobody will notice your low-self esteem, what you need to do is to look ridiculous. Just do what feels most uncomfortable. It is very much like stepping outside your comfort zone.

I am not saying it is easy but it is quick. It is liberating to do something we have so far feared to do. Just do it anyway.

The situation is more tricky, if the fear is an ’emotional’ such as anxiety around our abilities regarding future events or insecurity e.g. financial. It is often that we need to face this kind of fears in meditation and affirmative prayer. It means that we focus into the fear centre which is our self-talk. We listen in as our ‘fearful’ mind tells us his/her horror stories.  As we notice the ‘figure’ of the fear, we start imaging a bright golden light shining down on us. We gently usher the ‘fear figure’ into the light and simply allow it to be lifted up and turn into star-dust.

Please remember to BE KIND AND GENTLE with yourself when to attempt to face your fears. Though our freedom lies beyond the fear, you should not fight your fears or try to demolish them. They are there to protect you, except you do not need that kind of protection any more. You are an adult now. You can deal with the world on your own terms.

When the ‘fear figure’ is gone with the golden light, we can start with our affirmative payer. We need to replace the ‘negative elf-talk’ with positive ones. For example, when I am anxious about my abilities, after I have done the ‘golden light’ release, I start creating affirmations such as, “I allow Life/God to support me.” “I am supported and cared for.” The affirmative sentences must sit ‘right’ with you. They must give you a sense of ease and reassurance. Sit in meditation, pray the way that works for you and find your affirmative sentences.

A few words about the cave

So, throughout our entire existence, we live in a ‘cave’ because there is not much ‘inner light’ shining here. The cave is also our body and the various energy layers that surround our physical body. They all belong to the ‘mortal world’. It is dark here because we are not connected with the light that is not of this ‘world. This light is called the Light of Spirit or the Light of God.

As we start liberating ourselves from our limitations and fears we start letting ‘light’ into the our cave. The door of the cave starts opening and we start feeling lighter, happier, more alive, and more connected.

Remember, the Light can only start shining in if you open the door. And you open the door by starting to remove the ‘blocks’ of fear and self-imposed limitations.

Fear and control vs true happiness

This podcast above starts with describing Pastor Kudlik’s personal journey of chasing happiness around the globe, travelling from one place to another, in vain.

Then it delves into discussing insecurity, anxiety and fear and how it led into an obsession with control.

Fear, though we do not notice it most of the time because we often see control as an empowered state of being, takes over our life and eventually, we find that it has taken over every aspect of our life. It is exhausting.

Unity suggests that surrendering is empowering, it is not giving-up, it is not an external submission to something.

God is an energy, a higher state of being. Meditation helps connecting with inner peace and the experience of loving of God, though it is not the only way to experience the Loving.

The podcast also talks about what Unity is; the founders and fundamental teaching; and the main teaching which is a deep acceptance of our unique individuality.

An in-depth Podcast

A great discussion on Unity and its teaching offered by Rev Kudlik.

In this podcast you will hear about what Unity is and isn’t, What is true sense of happiness, the importance of forgiveness and meditation in practical terms, and about the 5-step process from Bitterness to Wholeness. (the discussion was generated by AI in an amazingly professional manner, except that it assumed that I was a male person 🙂

Confidence

This morning I was thinking about confidence. We regard confidence as one of the most desired personality trait but we fail to notice how confidence was built in the first place.  Does your sense of confidence come from a place of ‘fear’ and self-defence? Or does it come from a place of ‘knowing who you are’ and connectedness of Spirit?

Listen to my thoughts here and let me know what you think.
