The 12 Powers of Man

This is a simplified summary of Charles Fillmore’s book, The 12 Powers of Men.

The 12 Powers are seen as practical tools for spiritual transformation and everyday living, helping individuals become more fully aligned with what Unity calls the Christ within (it is not a religious idea but a symbol). Please read more on  Unity’s basic ideology HERE, CLICK.

The 12 Powers are one of the most distinctive teachings of the Unity movement. They were developed by Charles Fillmore, who taught that every person possesses twelve innate spiritual capacities or “powers” because each person is created in the image of God. These are not supernatural abilities, but divine qualities that can be consciously developed and expressed in everyday life.

Unity teaches that spiritual growth involves awakening, balancing, and using these powers wisely.

Power Meaning Practical Expression
1. Faith Trust in God, life, and our divine potential. Facing uncertainty with confidence instead of fear.
2. Strength Inner courage, endurance, and resilience. Remaining calm and determined during challenges.
3. Wisdom Spiritual understanding and good judgement. Making thoughtful decisions instead of reacting impulsively.
4. Love Unconditional acceptance, compassion, and unity. Forgiving others, showing kindness, and building relationships.
5. Power The ability to choose, act, and express spiritual authority. Setting healthy boundaries and taking responsibility for your life.
6. Imagination The creative ability to envision new possibilities. Visualising positive outcomes and finding creative solutions.
7. Understanding Insight into spiritual principles and life’s deeper meaning. Seeing beyond appearances and learning from experiences.
8. Will The capacity to make decisions and stay committed. Following through on goals with discipline and purpose.
9. Order Harmony, organisation, and right timing. Creating balance in daily life and prioritising what matters most.
10. Zeal Enthusiasm, energy, and joyful motivation. Approaching work and relationships with passion and purpose.
11. Elimination (Release) Letting go of what no longer serves us. Releasing resentment, fear, unhealthy habits, and limiting beliefs.
12. Life Vitality, growth, and the divine life force. Caring for your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

How the 12 Powers can be used in our Daily Life

Unity teaches that these powers work together. For example:

  • Faith gives us confidence to begin.
  • Wisdom helps us choose the right path.
  • Will keeps us committed.
  • Strength helps us persevere.
  • Love ensures our actions benefit others.
  • Zeal provides enthusiasm.
  • Order brings balance.
  • Elimination helps us release what blocks our growth.

When these powers are balanced, a person becomes more compassionate, resilient, and spiritually mature being.

Spiritual Maturity

According to Unity, the purpose of developing the 12 Powers is not to become more powerful over others, but to express more of our divine nature that already exists within us.

As we cultivate these qualities, we become more capable of living with love instead of fear wisdom instead of confusion, courage instead of discouragement, peace instead of anxiety, forgiveness instead of resentment.
